Lets start how the Lighting Industry came into being.
Light as a source is there since earth exist .
a)In ancient times we used to light lamps and burn fire to obtain source of light.
b)Then came industrial revolution , Candles made of wax was used as source of light and with invention of electricity Edison invented bulb (Filament based). This changed the perception of lighting across globe.
c)Then came CFL(Compact florescent lamps), Sodium Vapour lamps, Mercury Vapour Lamps. With this the application of Lighting increased. The only issue with these lights were though they saved energy they were not environment friendly. Recycling of new age lamps was a tough task.
d)Around 2003 led lighting started gaining traction in Commercial space. But it was widely accepted around 2008.The led lights are carbon friendly and has longer life and can be recycled easily thus reducing carbon foot prints.
e)New research is now going on to make nitrogen based bulbs.
Though lighting plays important role now yet it is highly ignored when a commercial or residential building is made. The main reason being we do not have enough lighting consultants.
Let us under stand the basics of lighting. One should keep following things in mind:
a) Lux level :It depends on the type of work to be performed E.g. If you want to perform precision work then high lux level is required .
b) Height from which source of light is placed.
c) Surrounding Atmosphere: You would require different fixture for Chemical industry and different for residential property.
d)How much Day light you are able to use.
e)Under what temperature light needs to operate: For Cold storage special lights are required and for water vehicles different lights are required.
f)Color of the rooms and area also play an important role.
Though most of the interior designers are competent enough to do lighting diagram right I would recommend to take help of lighting expert. This will have save energy as well as money.
Also while purchasing light price is important factor but also keep following things in mind.
a)Power factor: Higher power factor lower is loss so would result in less consumption.
b)Ampere: If inappropriate current is given fixture life will reduce.
c)Government standard: Proper BIS or ISI marking is there.
d)For driver based product check if it is isolated or non isolated. Non isolated driver is necessary for outdoor products.
