Rahman's Father , R.K. Sekhar Is Famous A talented Tamil musician who composed scores for the Malayalam film industry, Rahman began learning piano at the age of four.
His boyish interests were in electronics and computers, and his father's accidental purchase of a synthesizer allowed him to pursue his passion while learning to love music.
Sekhar died when his Rahman was nine years old, and by age eleven he was playing the piano professionally to support his family. Although he dropped out of school, his work experience led to a scholarship to study at his College, Trinity, Oxford, where he earned a degree in Western classical music
In 1988, after Sister recovered from a serious illness, his family converted to Islam and he took the name Allah Raka Rahman. Tired of playing in his band, he eventually turned his talents towards creating his jingles for commercials.
He wrote over 300 of his jingles. He later said the experience disciplined him, as writing jingles required conveying a strong message and mood in a short amount of time. In 1991, at an award ceremony for his work in a coffee commercial, Rahman met Bollywood film director Mani Ratnam and was persuaded to write music for a feature film.
Her first project was Her Roja (1992), which led to the soundtrack to Rahman's first hit film. More than 100 film scores followed, including the music for Lagaan (2001), the first Bollywood film to be nominated for an Oscar. Rahman's albums have sold over 100 million copies of him.
British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber heard some of Rahman's soundtracks and asked the composer if he would be interested in writing a stage musical. Working with lyricist Don Black, Rahman composed the score for Bombay Dreams, a colorful satire on Bollywood cinema, and the show opened to modest fanfare in London's West End in 2002. , Rahman was already well-known among London's large Indian crowd, ticket sales were strong, and a Broadway version of the show opened in 2004.
A musical version of Rahman's next stage project, The Lord of the Rings, premiered in Toronto in 2006. The production was given a multi-million dollar budget and worked with Rahman.
