The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the Golden Gate, a one-mile wide strait linking San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The bridge connects the city of San Francisco, California, at the top of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 over the strait.
It also accommodates pedestrians and cyclists, and is identified as a section of U.S. Bicycle Route 95. Acknowledged by the American Society of Civil Engineers as a Modern World Wonder, the bridge is a widely known symbol of San Francisco and California.
The concept of a permanent connection between San Francisco and Marin grew more popular in the late 1800s, but it wasn't until the early 1900s that it became achievable. Joseph Strauss played the role of lead engineer on the project, while Leon Moisseiff, Irving Morrow, and Charles Ellis all played important roles in the design process. The bridge, which was opened to the public in 1937, has been through several retrofits and improvement projects over the years.

Frommer's travel guide describes the Golden Gate Bridge as "potentially the most beautiful and definitely the most photographed bridge globally." When it was first built in 1937, this suspension bridge was the longest and tallest in the world, holding those titles until 1964 and 1998. The primary length of the bridge is 4,200 feet (1,280 m) with a total elevation of 746 feet (227 m).

Established by a California legislative act in 1928, the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District was formed to oversee the design, building, and funding of the Golden Gate Bridge. Due to financial difficulties after the 1929 Wall Street Crash, the District sought a $30 million bond measure (now worth $532 million) for construction. The bonds were authorized in November 1930, through voting in the counties impacted by the bridge. The construction budget was $27 million when approved, equivalent to $492 million today. Nevertheless, it wasn't until 1932 that the District was able to offload the bonds. The founder of Bank of America, Amadeo Giannini, stepped in to purchase the full amount of the bonds to support the local economy.

Recognized as one of the most stunning bridges globally, the Golden Gate Bridge stands out due to its various distinct features. The Bridge is a stunning sight filled with towering structures, expansive cables, and a wide span, making it a beautiful masterpiece of both aesthetics and engineering with its use of color, sound, and light.
