stonehenge is an ancient stone structure located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, just two miles (3 km) west of Amesbury. It is made up of a circular arrangement of tall sarsen stones, each standing at a height of about 13 feet (4.0 m), with a width of seven feet (2.1 m), weighing around 25 tons.
They are connected by horizontal lintel stones using mortise and tenon joints, a distinctive characteristic not found in other monuments of the same time period.
Within the area there is a circle of smaller stones that are blue in color. Within them are standalone trilithons, consisting of two heavier upright sarsens connected by a single lintel. The entire monument, currently in a state of ruin, faces the sunrise during the summer solstice and the sunset during the winter solstice.
Several hundred burial mounds, along with various Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, surround the stones located within earthworks in England.
Stonehenge was built over a period of time starting around 3100 BC and finishing around 1600 BC. The well-known circle made of big sarsen stones was erected sometime between 2600 BC and 2400 BC. The earth bank and ditch that encircle the monument's earliest phase have been dated back to approximately 3100 BC.
Radiocarbon dating indicates that the bluestones were arranged in their present locations around 2400 to 2200 BC, yet they could have been on the site as far back as 3000 BC.
Stonehenge, a well-known monument in the United Kingdom, is considered a cultural symbol of Britain. It has been legally safeguarded as a scheduled monument since 1882, following the passage of the Ancient Monuments Protection Act in the UK. The UNESCO included the site and its vicinity on the list of World Heritage Sites in 1986. Stonehenge is in the possession of the Crown and overseen by English Heritage; the adjacent land is owned by the National Trust.
Stonehenge may have served as a burial site since its early days. Remains of human bones have been found in deposits dating back to 3000 BC when the ditch and bank were originally constructed, with burials continuing for at least 500 more years.
The builders of Stonehenge remain unknown. The location on Salisbury Plain in England has been utilized for ceremonial activities and altered by various groups at various points in time. According to archaeological findings, it is believed that the initial alteration of the location was carried out by ancient Mesolithic hunter-gatherers.
