Alberto Sall, a geochemist at Brown University in England, spent several years trying to dispel the common claim that "the Moon was born dry" and discovered that the water formed deep inside the Moon is similar to the source of water on Earth.  His study suggests that the Moon captured a solid water supply from Earth when the planet formed from a cataclysmic collision 4.5 million years ago.[2]

In the 1970s, Sal and his team conducted a study with water from two lunar rocks brought back by the Apollo astronauts, according to the May 9 issue of Science.  These rocks are likely the result of volcanic eruptions early in the Moon's life that pushed buried lava into the surface, and consist of tiny bubbles of dark lava bound together by crystals that prevent water from escaping into the atmosphere.Artifacts represent the distinct phases of the moon visible each day.
