Today's story revolves around Maa Kali stepping on Lord Shiva. In temples and depictions, you may have observed Maa Kali portrayed in anger, standing upon Shiva. This symbolic act finds its roots in an ancient tale from the Markandeya Purana:
Long ago, there existed a formidable demon known as Raktabeej, whose name loosely translates to "one whose drop of blood can spawn another like himself." Raktabeej undertook rigorous meditation for years to attain the favor of Lord Shiva. Impressed by his unwavering devotion, Shiva appeared before him and granted Raktabeej a boon. The demon, bowing humbly, requested that every drop of his blood spilled on the ground would give rise to another Raktabeej. Pleased with his dedication, Shiva fulfilled his wish.
As time passed, Raktabeej abused his newfound powers, causing havoc among gods and humans alike. Believing himself invincible due to his ability to regenerate from his own blood, he posed a threat that even the assembled deities could not overcome. Desperate for a solution, they turned to Shiva, who regretfully could not annul the boon he had granted.
In their hour of need, the deities approached Maa Parvati, the consort of Shiva, beseeching her to intervene. In response to their plea, Maa Parvati assumed the form of Maa Kali, the embodiment of fierce divine feminine power. Known as the Dark Mother, Maa Kali embodies time and transformation. She manifested in her tantric form, adorned with ten forms of goddesses known as Mahavidyas, and confronted Raktabeej.
In the fierce battle that ensued, Maa Kali relentlessly attacked Raktabeej. Each time she struck him, drops of his blood fell to the ground, spawning new demons. To prevent further proliferation, Maa Kali skillfully collected the blood in a bowl with one hand while wielding her weapons with others. She also consumed the blood, earning the name Rakteshwari, or the goddess of blood.
Despite her victory over Raktabeej, the consumption of demon blood intoxicated Maa Kali, causing her to lose control. She continued to wreak havoc, posing a threat to the cosmos itself. None could subdue her until Lord Shiva, in a desperate attempt to halt her rampage, lay down in her path. As Maa Kali inadvertently stepped upon her beloved husband, she regained awareness and realized the extent of her actions. Overcome with remorse, her tongue protruded in astonishment and shame.
This poignant moment, captured in countless depictions, symbolizes Maa Kali's awakening from her destructive trance upon recognizing Shiva beneath her feet. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of unchecked power and the importance of balance in the cosmic order.
