Kohli began his formal cricketing career for the Polly Umrigar Trophy with the Delhi under 15 teams in October 2002. He won 72 runs and was the top runner-up of his team. He was averaging 34.40. He became the team captain for the same competition next year and won an impressive 390 runs in five posts. Under his leadership, the Delhi of 15 teams enjoyed a number of wins.
In the year 2006, Kohli was selected for the trip of England in India under 19 teams. He was good at the Indians and he won the show.
In this year's first-class cricket, Kohli made his debut in Delhi and scored 10 in his maiden appearances. During this time his dad died of a stroke in his brain. The devotion and professionalism of Kohli to cricket replaced his personal grief. One day after the death of his father, he chose to play for his team against Karnataka. Kohli then played the T-20 format for the team of Delhi which garnered him fame and soon became a $30,000 youth contract member of the Bangalore Royal Challengers team.

In 2009, he was chosen to compete at the four-team Emerging Players Tournament in Australia.

In 2010 Kohli had a chance to play in all five games of the tri-nation ODI competition in Bangladesh as Tendulkar had remained with the team.
When India chased 297 at 51/3, in the match against Bangladesh, Kohli hit 91 for India to win. Kohli performed incredibly well and became the world's third highest rider to register two ODI hundred before his 22nd birthday, Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina being the two first. Kohli began a string of records with 1000 ODIs as the third batsman in the globe before he turned 22. In 2013, after Dhoni was wounded and ruled unsuitable to play, Kohli became captain of the Indian triangle cricket team in West Indies. Kohli scored his first 100 as a skipper with 102 of the 83 balls in the second match of the competition. Kohli reached the third fastest ODI century, breaking the 100 run mark in 61 balls in the seven-patch ODI series against Australia. Kohli was the quickest batman to win 5000 runs in ODI in the two-game test series against Western Indian as the last Tendulkar test series.
