Hi there
At some point of time in our life we might feel the necessity of learning a foreign language. While pursuing, we face a lot of difficulties in having us stay on the track. I am a fan of languages and I have a deep love for languages that I learnt around 4 languages (excluding my mother tongue which is Tamil). Learning a language is not a irritating or a boring thing. It is a journey which requires us to sit down, think and imbibe the ideas and cultures of a society which we are not exposed to. More over we often get confused on how to approach the language and make huge blunders and feel that learning a language is not our cup of tea and finally quit our ambition without even knowing the fault in our approach. This confusion arises particularly when a person is language his first foreign language. (By the way, by foreingn language I mean those language excluding a person's mother tongue.) I have faced the same while i was learning my first language and later on i got adopted to the process. I was successful in finding an approach which could easily get the result.
I need to have my opinions well expressed so i would be breaking some of the principles of old school which includes but not limited to myths, taboos and useless genre of books recommended. (for which I apologise in prior)
The first mistake one commits in learning a language is that he goes to the book shop and buys a grammar book (Wren and martin if it is English, Hidayatun Nahw if it is Arabic) or a book which presents these tough grammar rules in a palatable way congrats that you have commited your first blunder …..jeez You may ask then “what shall i do ???”
Dear beloved readers, you need to understand that language comes through application and not by reading a dry grammar text or some book which makes that dry grammar palatable. The first thing you need to avoid is the standard grammar book when you are a fresher to that language. Then what to buy instead ?? Though the answer to this is very simple but it requires you to put a huge effort. First find a book which teaches you the grammar without you realising it. Let me not confuse you further. You need to find a book which teaches you grammar in a more applied (language) way rather than those mundane books which feeds you only grammar. For our case study lets take arabic and discuss in the forthcoming part of this blog series for further clarity on this
See you in Part 2
Expect the unexpected stay tuned …….your comments are welcome.
Happy blogging….!!!!
