Thunivu Review: Ajith Stars In A Decent Heist Film That Is Weighed Down By Generic Tropes

The new Tamil-language film "Thunivu" is a lot of things in one film. It's packed with dynamic action, wonderful comedy, and (of course) the occasional heart-pounding musical number (often when you least expect it). But, above all, "Thunivu" is a heist film. The term "responsibility" refers to the act of determining whether or not a person is responsible for his or her own actions.

H. Vinoth's "Thunivu" surprises by attempting to be both a stinging criticism of financial systems and institutions and unashamed big screen fun. Each is (mostly) effective, and Vinoth does an excellent job of portraying both the thrills and the message. The film struggles to weave these aspects together. That should suffice.

Vinoth doesn't spend any time in setting up and launching his complex tale. The film begins with a mobster named Radha (Veera) painstakingly planning a robbery at the privately held "Your Bank" in Chennai's heart. Within minutes he and his heavily armed men storm the bank, taking down the guards and scooping up their hostages. However, as they prepare to cash out, their plans are thwarted by a mysterious white-bearded guy (Kumar), who slaughters Radha's men in a spectacular ballet of finely choreographed carnage.

But this enigmatic figure is no angel. He is, in fact, a criminal known as Dark Devil, and he has targeted the bank for his own well-kept motives. The cops swiftly congregate outside, commanded by their tenacious commissioner

The film then takes an unexpected turn. The action slows down as Vinoth bombards us with revelations, many of which are delivered via lengthy flashbacks. Dark Devil's transformation from brutal thug to roguish Robin Hood is daring but unexpected. Soon, we'll be discussing bank scams, mutual funds, and credit card debt. And suddenly the baddies aren't just gangsters. They are also bankers, cops, politicians, and members of the news media. Everyone in Vinoth's story has dirty hands.

The transition from full-throttle action to biting comments isn't the most elegant. But it's difficult not to admire Vinoth's jabs at various sorts of corruption, particularly in the banking industry.

Vinoth has given his exquisite work in the bank robbery as well as in the sea fight scene.

Thunivu is not the best film in H Vinoth’s filmography, but it has many improvements compared to Vinoth’s last star vehicle film Valimai. There is no deliberate attempt to boost the hero as someone who does the right thing, and the effort is to deliver a movie that can be called a heist action thriller. Despite having a script with hiccups in the second half, Thunivu feels like a fun entertainer, mainly because it isn’t trying too much to fit into the requirements of a festival-release superstar film.
