The Indian Premier League (IPL) (sometimes known as the TATA IPL for sponsorship reasons) is a men's Twenty20 (T20) cricket league conducted yearly in India and contested by 10 city-based franchise clubs.er [3] [4]  In 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) established the league. The IPL is led by Arun Singh Dhumal. [5]  The competition is normally contested annually in the summer (between March and May) and has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme, which means that less international cricket is played during the IPL seasons. [6]

The BCCI then dceclared on September 14, 2012, that the 2009 winners, the Deccan Chargers, would be terminated due to the team's inability to find new owners. [27]  The following month, on October 25, an auction was held to determine who would control the replacement franchise, with Sun TV Network winning the bid for the Hyderabad licence. [28]  Sunrisers Hyderabad is the name of the team. [29]
The Pune Warriors withdrew from the IPL on May 21, 2013 due to financial disagreements with the BCCI. [30]  The BCCI officially cancelled the licence on October 26, 2013, due to the franchise's failure to furnish the required bank guarantee. [31]
On June 14, 2015, it was announced that Chennai Super Kings, the two-time champions and the inaugural season champions,

Player acquisition, squad composition, and compensation
This section needs to be updated. The rationale provided is: The team rules are from 2020, and the average compensation amounts are from 2015. (March 2023)
A team can recruit players in one of three ways: the yearly player auction, exchanging players with other teams during trade periods, or signing substitutes for unavailable players. Players enter the auction and establish their starting bid, and are purchased by the franchise that bids the highest. Unsold auction players may be signed as replacement signings. A player can only be traded in the trading windows with his consent, with the franchise paying any difference between the old and new prices.

The IPL has various rules that other T20 leagues and the International T20 cricket format do not always have:

Strategic Timeout - Television timeouts are used in IPL games. If the umpires discover that teams are abusing this privilege, a penalty may be issued. During each inning, each side is allotted a 2:30 "strategic timeout"; one must be taken by the bowling team between the ends of the sixth and ninth overs, and one must be taken by the batting team between the ends of the thirteenth and sixteenth overs. The on-field umpire will raise his hand in the air and tap his wrist to signal a strategic timeout.[53] This rule was inspired by the NBA.[Citation required] [a]
The Decision Review System (DRS) has been implemented in the 2018 season.
