Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, also known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer, who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination against the untouchables.
While we are taught about his contribution to the caste struggle and his role in drafting the Constitution, there was much more to know about the man. Here are some facts and things that a lot of people don't know about him: -
Mahad Satyagraha:
We talked about Mahatma Gandhi for Satyagraha and the Dandi marching movement, but even before that, 3 years ago from that movement on March 20, 1927, Satyagraha was led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to allow untouchables (dalits) to use water in a public tank in Mahad, Maharashtra, India.
Dr. Ambedkar had a role in conceptualizing RBI:
The Reserve Bank of India was conceptualized according to the guidelines presented by Dr. Ambedkar to the Hilton Young Commission based on his book, The Rupee Problem: Its Origin and Solution.
Savior of labor rights in India:
Under the previous colonial rule in India, 14 to 12 hours of work by law, your employer could force you to work up to 14 hours, but Dr. Ambedkar, as Minister of Labor and as Labor Member of the Executive Council of the Viceroy between 1942 and 1946, this law changed. and reduced it from 12 to 8 Hrs.
Women's rights:
Ambedkar was the one who introduced the Hindu Code Bill through which the Inheritance of property, the Right to adopt children, the Right to Divorce, the Right to remarry came to our Parliament. It worked to improve the status of women by granting fundamental rights to all citizens regardless of caste, creed, race, and sex. She also introduced the Mines Maternity Benefit bill for women across India. Under this law, a woman working in the mine is entitled to maternity benefit for a period of 8 weeks.
