I have attended numerous job interviews, every job interview is unique, I have applied for different job roles which mostly covers the finance and technology sectors.

There are some questions that are used in every interview because they are a requirement such as questions related to your education, work experience and hobbies to name a few.

There are many rounds of interview that is conducted by the human relations manager and the manager of the particular role for which you are applying because they need to understand if you are suitable and fit in to the requirements of the organisation.

There is one question that can decide whether you are suitable for the job or not, where do you see yourself in five years?, a question that is tricky and has to be handled with care.

When you answer the question, one has to be careful that they do not appear to be too casual or over confident when replying, the answer needs to be positive without being too ambitious.

This particular question can have a major impact because it is hypothetical, you are talking about something that might or might not take place in the future and you are in judged in the present time whether you have what it takes to get the job done.

If you have gone through a consultant, they will tell you that the best way to respond is to highlight your strengths and achievements, if you are a fresher or have previous job experience, one can talk about an internship or the targets they have achieved while working in their previous company.

The interviewer does not know who you are, they learn about you from the resume that you have submitted, when you answer the question, it needs to match with the information that you have submitted about yourself.

If you say that you have worked in the field of finance and are applying for a technical job role the question is how will you adapt your knowledge of finance in the field of technology.

Finance requires accuracy, focus, determination and patience, this is applicable to the technical field as well, the interviewer is interested in why you want to change job roles and what happens five years from now.

We need to convince the interviewer that we can work in a technical job role if given the opportunity and it is a long term goal where we are willing to learn and grow.

Working in an organisation is not just about qualification, specialization and experience, these are helpful but the interviewer looks for other factors such as leadership qualities, stability, team player etc.

When you answer the question, we need to bring out the positive aspects of our past experiences in a way that matches the requirements of the organisation.

In the end, there are no right or wrong answers, most times we do not know where we have gone wrong, we need to be confident and prepared, do our research and hope for the best.
