Vitamins: The Key To A Better You
The word Vitamin was first used more than a century ago, it is short for vital amines, researchers have divided vitamins into two categories, those that were absorbed by fat and others that were absorbed by water.
Furthermore, vitamins were differentiated according to the alphabetical order in which they were found and here are some of the vitamins that are essential for our wellbeing.
- Vitamin A is a fat absorbing vitamin that is needed to prevent eye infections such as cataract, loss of vision and blindness. The best sources of vitamin A are poultry products like milk, eggs and vegetables like spinach and carrots to name a few.
- Vitamin B 1 is a water absorbing vitamin, it helps the body by producing enzymes that break down the sugar and reduce the risk of illnesses such as diabetes. This vitamin can be found in brown rice, oranges, cauliflower and eggs.
- Vitamin B 2 comes under water absorbing vitamin, it is important for our wellbeing because it enables the growth of cells in the body and aids in the process of digestion of food which gives us the energy required for our body to function normally. We can find this vitamin in milk, cheese, eggs, bananas and beans.
- Vitamin B 3 is a water absorbing vitamin that protects the body from health problems due to indigestion such as malfunctioning of the intestine, skin problems and diarrhoea. We can get this vitamin from milk, eggs, fish, tomatoes and carrots.
- Vitamin B 5 is a water absorbing vitamin that is needed for hormones, it can be found in meat, yoghurt and avocado.
- Vitamin B 6 is needed to produce red blood cells in the body, this helps to prevent anaemia. This vitamin can be obtained from chickpea, dry fruits and bananas.
- Vitamin C helps the body to heal quickly in case of injuries and helps to protect and improve the functioning of the immune system. It is commonly found in citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons and vegetables.
- Vitamin D is a fat absorbing vitamin that helps in the strengthening of the bones, it can be obtained from sunlight, fish, eggs and mushrooms.
- Vitamin E is a fat absorbing vitamin that helps to prevent the blood cells from being destroyed, they can be found in leafy vegetables, eggs and almonds.
- Vitamin K is a fat absorbing vitamin that is needed to help in the clotting of blood which is essential in case of accidents where we suffer serious injuries and the chances of losing blood are high if clotting does not take place. This vitamin can be obtained from pumpkin, figs and leafy vegetables.
We also have what is known as vitamin supplements that helps in providing the protection for the immune system in the elderly who maybe suffering from lack of vitamins and are unable to follow a proper diet.
In the end, vitamins are vital and plays a major role in keeping us strong, energetic and giving our body a fighting chance against anything that threatens our survival.
