Left handed people are a small but successful minority in a population worldwide, that is dominated by the right handed majority.

Approximately 10% of the population is left handed and there are many theories about how people are born left handed, research has shown that it is due to biological or genetics, that influences the behaviour of a child and makes them left handed.

There are many interesting facts and myths about left handed people that we have heard of, here are some interesting point to note:

Being left handed is associated with evil, this myth became a part of what we believe because the devil is shown as left handed, unfortunately left handed people have to suffer for something that is not based on fact.

Another common misconception, is left handed people are physically weak and as a result die earlier than right handed people, there is no scientific evidence to back up this theory and yet we continue to believe this without checking if there is any truth to this claim.

Being left handed is associated with superstition, in ancient times, it is believed that war locks and witches could cast a spell and cause harm to those whom they wished to destroy.

It is a proven fact that there are more left handed men as compared to women, studies have also shown that left handed people can be identified before the time of birth.

When it comes to sports, left handed people have an advantage, this can be found in sports like tennis, cricket, baseball and swimming. For example, a right handed batsman in cricket in used to batting against a right arm bowler, he needs to adjust the way he bats when he is facing a left arm bowler, which is the reason why many teams adopt the right left bowling combination to catch the batsman off-guard and make him play a shot that gets him out.

Left handed people are bright and have the ability to learn and understand concepts faster than right handed people, because they make use of both sides of the brain which makes them more efficient at learning and doing well at school.

Research has shown that left handed people are creative, they have a good imagination and are able to perform well in the field of entertainment, where the focus is more on the use of audio visual skills to express themselves.

Despite a change in attitude towards left handed people, in the subcontinent, left handed people are treated differently and are looked down upon in society.

Left handed people are better at driving and are involved in fewer accidents as a percentage of the population when compared to right handed people.

It has been found that left handed people are more likely to suffer from mental illnesses, depression and mood disorders, this maybe due to the way they are treated by society, which makes them feel unwanted, the whole world is against them and they are unable to be themselves.

Finally, we need to realise that being born left handed is a challenge, despite the hostile environment and hardships, left handed people have proven time and again that they are able to overcome difficult situations and have managed to exceed expectations and outperform right handed people in every sphere of daily life.
