Antarctica is a desolate cold and the only continent on the Earth without an indigenous human population. In Antarctica during the winters the sun don't rise for four months and temperature reach below-60 degree centigrade. It's covered in a four kilometres of thick sheet of ice and is the driest place on the Earth. Antarctica has presence of mountains , beaches, penguins and all the other things a continent should possess but what is absent there is people. Ofcourse there are people living in scientific stations from all over the world but it doesn't have a native people group. Norwegian's Roald Amundsen and his crew were the first humans ever to reach the South pole on December fourteenth 1911.
Since it is naturally uninhabited by humans the race to own Antarctica began and by 1940 Antarctica had eight claims by eight countries. Today the claimants of Antarctica are Chile, Argentina, Uk, Norway, Australia, New Zealand and France. Most of these claims are recognised only by the other claimants and not by the the broader international community. Dozens of explorers from Britain , Norway, France set out for the South pole in a bid for fame, glory, fortune and prizes . Antarctica have dozens have resources but as of today it is economically unviable or unfeasible to extract them. Antarctica was given a dozen of names by dozens of explorers who made it there. The names include queen mary land , king edward (7) plateau, Princess Elizabeth land Graham land and many more.
The countries who were involved and who weren't involved felt a need to protect Antarctica from exploitation and maintain its peaceful status. This concern led to a meeting and in 1959 they all signed a treaty known as" the Antarctica Treaty". The treaty laid down certain rules like:
All nations who had colonies on Antarctica could keep them but with a restriction that no new activities based on a territorial claim can happen. The involved countries were debarred from making any new claims using military and were also not allowed to enlarge their previous claimed region. The treaty also prohibited minning, explosions and heavy petting. Two countries to whom this rule did not apply were the USA and USSR who are till date allowed to make their own territorial claims on Antarctica.
Today around more than forty four thousand tourists visit per year to witness it's vast stunning beautiful wilderness. The Antartic Treaty will expire in 2048.
