First aid is described as the process of helping someone first and foremost with the basic needs of treatment before he can receive professional medical help.

This could occur during an unexpected emergency situation such as a person who has met with either a major or minor accident, then we can provide them with basic first aid by cleaning the wound and putting a bandage over the affected area, there is no need to be a medical expert to deal with such a situation, but one must take the necessary precautions and seek medical help to make sure that the wound is not infected and requires the relevant medical treatment from an expert.

There are some important rules of first aid that we need to follow:

  1. Our aim is to save the person's life, for this need to identify and decide what can be done to reduce the damage done to the body and how to provide relief from the pain, suffering and loss of blood in case of severe injuries.
  2. We need to contact the medical center at the earliest, without wasting time and being over confident in our ability to help someone who needs emergency medical assistance.
  3. The biggest mistake we can make in such a situation is getting panicky and being unable to provide the required help correctly. We may forget to check the person's pulse rate, if they are breathing or hear the heartbeat, these are all little things that make a big difference, when saving someone's life.
  4. We must remember to wash our hands before giving first aid, this reduces the risk of getting infections for you and the injured party.
  5. Do not try to move anyone who has suffered from a head injury, this might increase the suffering of the person who is already in a great deal of pain.
  6. If there is bleeding, try to use a cloth and apply pressure to the wound but be careful not to cover the wound too tightly, it would restrict the flow of blood to the body.

Here are some common scenarios where knowledge and use of first aid can help to save lives:

A) Fractures is a scenario that we can be of assistance, before we can get the injured person to a hospital, we can help them by using bandages to support the injured part of the body, while doing so, avoid placing the bandage too tightly as it would cause swelling and make the pain worse.

B) In case of cuts, first clean the wound with water and then cover the wound with a bandage, the bleeding should stop within a few minutes, if not then call for help immediately.

C) If a person has been in an accident where they have been badly burned, then cover them with a blanket and ask them to roll on the floor, to put out the flames. Do not use cold water on the affected area of the body, it can cause further damage to the body tissue.

To conclude, taking the right and appropriate action when it comes to first aid, on our part can help to save lives in a difficult situations.
