Maintaining a work-life balance can be challenging, but how you handle it can have a significant impact on your family's connection. A healthy work-life balance, where you can work around your family's demands and aren't limited to the 9 to 5 hours, increases self-esteem since you feel more in control of your life and are less likely to worry about failing to fulfill your obligations in any capacity. You'll have a life away from home, and your family will be happy to see you more often.

COMMUNICATION

during both the good and the tough times. Children often find it hard to put their feelings into words and just knowing that their parents are listening can be enough. Talk about yourself – not just about your problems but about your daily life. If they feel included in the things you do they are more likely to see the value of including you in the things they do.

QUALITY TIME

Aim to schedule family time several times a week; for example, you could sit down to dinner together three times a week. This will provide an opportunity for you all to interact and discuss both the serious and lighter subjects. Invite your kids to assist you with errands or household tasks. Despite their protests, they will no longer feel like outsiders and will instead feel like part of your life.

Joint Decisions

With older children, it is normal for them to test the limits of boundaries to see what they can get away with. You may need to adaptboundaries as children grow into teens – it can even help to involve your child in the negotiation of new boundaries. Too many restrictions will be hard to keep on top of, so it is a good idea to work out which boundaries are really important to you, such as the ones for your children’s safety, and which boundaries are not worth fighting about. With fewer restrictions, your children will appreciate that the boundaries you do set are serious.

Be flexible

Children prefer to spend time with their parents above everything else. Making time for an unplanned trip to the park or an impromptu game may be a lot of fun and something you and your kids will look back on with nostalgia. Although having a routine is beneficial, it's okay to occasionally break it up for unplanned games and fun. It can be helpful for working families to set aside a few hours occasionally for a leisurely afternoon spent together.

Spend quality time with your partner

After you have kids, it might be challenging to find time for you and your spouse, but it is crucial that you do. After all, parents teach their children about relationships. Make sure you chat to them constantly about anything that comes up on a daily basis as well as just topics that you find interesting. Make an effort to schedule time for you to spend together, whether it be watching TV together or going out to eat.
