Although train travel is great, it is also a complicated journey if Lower Berth is not available for elderly people.
Lower Berth
Elderly people prefer the lower bed for sleeping because they cannot climb up and sleep.
But because of automatic reservation in the train, there is a possibility of getting Middle / Upper / Side Upper Berth even if Lower option is selected.
Sometimes there have been tragic incidents where tickets had to be canceled and rebooked for this reason.
Due to increasing complaints about this, the railway department allowed senior citizens to reserve lower berths.
Although this tradition has been introduced earlier, many people are not aware of this tradition.
What age group can book?
Males 60 years and above, Females 45 years and above.
How to book?
Instead of GENERAL in IRCTC site you have to choose Lower Berth / Sr.Citizen category.
Bookings are limited to two people (plus one companion).
If a third person is booked on the same ticket, they will automatically be booked in the GENERAL Quota category.
If there are two people, is it okay to have a separate box? will ask. You have to select only one box.
If you choose these, you will get a ticket in the lower berth.
Lower Berth is mostly available in S1 and S2 coaches.
This also reduces the walking distance, otherwise you have to use a battery vehicle to get to the box.
Use it if you need it.
