Sleep Disorders That You Might Be Ignoring But Requires Your Attention.

Let me start by telling you the importance of a good sleep in your life.

 A person can go consecutive 11 days without sleep and at last may start hallucinating and health deprivation or even worse. 

  • A good sleep helps you to concentrate and be productive in your life.
  • Good sleeps reduces the risk of heart diseases.
  • It helps your body to repair itself.
  • It improves your immune functions.
  • It makes you mentally and emotionally stable.
  • Sleep deprived people have bigger appetite and they tend to gain weight.

 There are some common sleep disorders that you might be ignoring till now but they require serious attention. 

 1. Insomnia: It is a dissatisfaction with sleep, characterized by difficulty in falling asleep, maintaining that sleep and going back to sleep after awakening at night. It includes the frequency of 3 times a week for at least 3 months.

 Solutions-

  • Avoid naps.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Maintain regular sleep schedule.
  • Avoid stimulation (coffee, tea or alcohol.) 

2. Narcolepsy: It is extreme daytime sleepiness, characterized by recurrent episodes of irresistible desire to sleep or unintentional sleep or napping. It includes the frequency of at least 3 times a week for at least 3 months. 

Solutions-

  • Scheduling regular brief naps.  

3. Hypersomnolence Disorder: It is characterized with excessive sleepiness despite a normal sleep duration at night. Patient has repeated episodes of sleep during daytime hours, prolonged night time sleep and difficulty in transitioning from sleep to wakefulness. 

Solutions-

  • Setting regular sleep-wake schedules.
  • Using multiple alarms.
  • Exposure to bright light
  • Social interaction 

4. Circadian Rhythm Sleep-wake Disorders: The important characteristics are persistent or recurrent pattern of sleep-wake disturbance with abnormal timing of sleep or irregularity in sleep duration, etc. 

Types of Circadian Rhythm Sleep-wake disorders are-

  • Delayed sleep phase type
  • Advanced sleep phase type
  • Irregular sleep-wake type
  • Non-24-hour sleep-wake type
  • Shift work disorder
  • Jet lag type

 Solutions-

  • Both light and melatonin when given at specific times can act to reset the circadian clock and help in restoring your rhythm.
  • Behavioural Interventions to regulate your sleeping schedule.

5. Sleep walking: It is characterized by repeated episodes of rising from bed during sleep and walking about. The Patient's eyes remain open and expressionless face. The sleep walkers are unresponsive to any sort of communicative efforts and are also difficult to wake.

Solution- 

  • Proper psychotherapy are very useful in these cases. 

6. Sleep Terrors: The episodes of sleep terrors are usually initiated by loud scream with extreme panic and intense fear.

 The patient may show signs like tachycardia (increased heartbeats), tachypnea (increased breathing rate) or diaphoresis (excessive sweating of hands).

 These patients are usually very violent as they run around and hit themselves into things or also hurt people around them leading to injuries. And the worst part is that there is complete amnesia for these activities.   

Solutions-

  • Psychotherapy are very useful in such cases.
