Given that his strict father (Samuthirakani), or as he describes him, the "sirappana tharamana villain" in his life wants him to study hard, Chakaravarthi (Sivakarthikeyan), the protagonist of Don, decides that he`d rather make a name for himself without really studying. The film is all about whether this young man manages to figure out what he wants to do in life while being in a soulsucking environmental an engineering college. Adding to his misfortune is Boominathan (SJ Suryah), a faculty member in the college, who is even more of a disciplinarian than his dad!
With this Santhosh SubramaniammeetsNanban setup, debutant director Cibi Chakaravarthi makes it possible for him to play to both the younger and older crowd. He smartly divides the film into two halves the firsthalf for the youth, the secondhalf for the family audience. Yes, we see how calculated this approach is, which makes Don less of a comingofage story and more of a commercial entertainer (suitably, cinematographer KM Bhaskaran fills the frames with colours), but the director manages to succeed.
Most of the film revolves around the conflict between Chakaravarti, University Don, and Bumi, and the lively performances of Shiva Karl Tikyan and SJ Surya bring those parts to life. Moves and Counter Moves bring the other down, as in the episode when Bumi arranged a parent teacher's meeting with Don's father and Don managed to take the teacher to reposition the student. It leads to some interesting moments of the two inventions that I invented to make you. This battle of wisdom is dotted with romantic moments between Don and Angaya Lucanni (Priyanka Mohan, okay). Things move into the sentimental realm of the second half, dangerously approaching a dangerous soap opera that acoustically deviates from the easy-going tones we've reached up to that point, but thankfully it drives the movie crazy. not. But the emotions it gives us in these scenes are not well worth it, as they try to forgo toxic parenting in the form of "love beyond explanation." The statement that parents are thinking about how to raise their children through trial and error is true, but given the treatment of their sons up to that point, it's hard to buy a movie attempt to turn Don's father into an adorable character. is. Still, the cast makes it possible. Sivakarthikeyan fits perfectly into that role and may even sell parts of the school. What really enhances it is his serious climax performance (actual similarities make it more effective). SJ Suryah excels in an easily cartoonized role (like the character of Sathyaraj in Nanban).
A small change in his facial expression is added to the comedy in the first half. And Samtira Canis helps us overlook the last-minute makeover of his character. The subplot includes Raju and Sharik, but the rest of the support casts (Suri, who appears as a relative of Chakaravarti, Barasara Banan, who plays a friend, Vijay, Sibangi, and Adila Pandi Lapin as a mother) are solid.
