Life is about making Choices. Dosai or Idly? Rajini or Kamal? Thala Or Thalapathy? Rahman or Raja? Appa pudikuma? or Amma pudikuma? you might ask. And Of Course, We refused to choose, opting instead for the safe third option: "Both" . Rambo (Vijay sethupathi) takes a similar decision in Kaathuvakula Rendu Kaadhal, refusing to choose between two women. but his decision is far from secure.
The film begins as a folk story, establishing the eccentricities of a young Rambo, who is regarded as the villages's bad omen. He is so unlucky that his father dies on the day he is born that his mother becomes ill just by being in his presence. And no one seems to like him. He meets Kanmani (Nayanthara) and Khatija (Samantha) on a fateful but lovely day, and both proclaim their love for him on a fateful but lovely day. And he still believes he is unfortunate. "Aiyoo paavam " Mumtaz for Kushi says in this scene. Rambo difficulties may seem aggravating to the outside world, but they are major concern for his self-sympathetic cab driver/bouncer. its the Appa-Amma conundrum all over again, as Writer-Director Vignesh shivan spins a tale about a guy who refuses to take an obligations and two women who almost let him off the hook.
The women like the protagonist, all are broken in their own way. If Kanmani, who is on her own in her search for a husband, encounters families who consider her younger sister and brother as a burden, Khatija has a family sees her as a means to advance up the socioeconomic ladder. And when the right Individual appears at the right time, saying the right things with the perfect expression….
There were some doubts that Vijay sethupathi may not be charming enough to justify looking over Samantha and Nayanthara. But those concerns were misplaced. I'm thinking of Nayanthara's Long drive sequence and how he redefines Charisma in montage munbers like "Naan Pizhai" with his effervescent screen presence. Nayanthara and Samantha, who are both touching and hilarious, give gravitas to their thankless role. Kanmani and Khatija simply given the appearance of having a choice. However, the actors in this film have excellent comic timing. More than charm or humour though, it is the film calmer movements that take it to the great heights.
Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal explores ideas of certain types of mental illnee for almost half the time it runs. Along the way, the movie seemed to recognize the stupidity, and the creator evaded the "misrepresentation" bullet. But then that angel comes back out of nowhere and brings great disadvantages to Khatija and Kanmani, who aren't sure the director is confidently showing them. That does't means that the premise that two women fight for a man is exaggeration. we have seen this idea for many ways over the years. However, there is one aspect that connects almost every other movies in this sub-genre. Rambo always gets what he wants….but when it comes to Khatija and Kanmani we seem to have to wait.
