There are many haunted locations across America that have creepy stories, eerie history, and ghost sightings. These spooky places will give you goosebumps and keep you thinking about them for days after visiting. There are so many creepy locations in the U.S. that it’s hard to choose which ones to include on this list. Some of America’s scariest places aren’t even old or historically significant sites—they’re just normal houses with terrifying pasts and present-day specters as residents. From hotels to schools, prisons and homes, read on to find out where you can go to catch a glimpse of otherworldly spirits lurking among us.

Fort Sumter:

The scariest part of visiting Fort Sumter isn’t the Civil War history, but the paranormal activity that goes on there. The fort was the site of a blooded battle, and both slaves and soldiers were imprisoned there. Visitors have reported seeing apparitions of both guards and prisoners, as well as experiencing cold spots, mysterious moaning, and sudden panic attacks. It’s also said that the ghost of a Confederate soldier has been spotted in the prison cells, holding a lantern. The fort has a séance every year to try to contact the evasive spirits. You’ve got to see this event if you want to see some truly paranormal activity.

Another scary place to visit in America is the Winchester Mystery House. The scariest part of this house isn’t that it’s huge or has an intricate Victorian design; it’s the ghost story that goes along with it. Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, was told by a medium that she would be haunted by the ghosts of all the people killed by Winchester rifles. To try to appease them, she built a crazy-massive house that she continued to add onto for the rest of her life. Visitors to the house have said they’ve seen figures walking around, eerie ghostly orbs, and heard eerie moaning and crying.

The creepy abandoned asylum in Meriden, Connecticut :

Want to get creeped out by some paranormal activity? Visit an abandoned insane asylum, of course! The old Meriden State Hospital for the Criminally Insane is a creepy, abandoned building that has had reports of paranormal activity for decades. Visitors have seen shadowy figures, heard strange noises, and felt cold spots.

The Organ Asylum:

Another creepy building that’s known for paranormal activity is the Organ Asylum in Pennsylvania. It’s a former mental institution that has been turned into a hotel. Guests have reported hearing voices inside the building, and some have even reported seeing ghosts.
