You know you’re a grown up, responsible adult when you are about as scared of visiting creepy haunted houses as you are visiting a graveyard at night.

However, on the eve of Halloween, we find our fear of darkness and creepy masked strangers replaced with a more rational fear of contracting some sort of horrible disease by wandering around in this dark, damp and open space that people have been known to go missing in.

With that said, if you’re not quite ready to give up on your love for all things creepy just yet - then why not continue your love affair with all things spooky by visiting some of the scariest places in America?

If you love watching horror movies or reading scary books but don’t necessarily relish being trapped inside an old house with 50 other people for an hour just waiting for something to jump out at everyone - then check out these top 2 deadliest urban legends.

Tubers: The Return of the Slenders

The story behind tubers is a bizarre one. The story goes that people will see strange creatures that look like long, giant worms in the ground. They will often climb out of the ground and up trees, where they will wait in the branches until nightfall. The urban legend was mostly confined to the internet, but recently it has gotten more attention thanks to a TV show that featured a modern take on the old story. Despite only being common in select parts of the world, the urban legend of the tubers has spread thanks to the internet. People have often claimed to see the strange creatures in the ground, usually around the roots of trees and plants. While the creatures may be real, the urban legend has become more prominent thanks to the internet.

 Mary:

One of the most iconic urban legends of all time is Mary. The story of a woman who died after being trapped in a well has been around since before the 20th century, but has seen a recent resurgence thanks to Hollywood. Movies, books, TV shows, and even toys have brought this puzzling old tale into the modern era, providing a new generation of kids with the chance to be haunted by the story. While there are many variations on the tale, the important piece is that you go into a bathroom, turn off the lights, and call out “Mary” three times. After that, you’ll supposedly see the ghost of Mary appear in the mirror. There are also some variations that state that you have to look directly into the mirror and not move your eyes away from Mary’s reflection. If you do, she will come out of the mirror and kill you. While this urban legend has been around since the 1930s, it has seen a resurgence thanks to various TV shows and movies that have revisited the story.
