“Men of quality respect women's equality.”
There is a popular opinion in society that women anyway receive valuable gifts and dowry from their parents which is roughly 1/10th of their property, and so, they should not claim property from their parents. Well, this is an intolerable patriarchal strategy.
Let's take an example, Radha is a girl who had a very grand wedding and received gold and jewelry as gifts along with dowry. But later over time, she found that her husband is an alcoholic and he squandered all the money, sold all the jewels, and eventually died early.
Now, she doesn't have a single penny. But imagine if she had a share of her father's property., she might not be starving like this now.
In my opinion, women also have equal status and hence, have equal rights in their father's property since their birth. The fact that she is married and her husband already acquired the property (but the lady can use it for her maintenance only she can't hold its title ) of his father ,doesn't claim self-reliance, independence, and equality.
And also, it is seen in many cases that women become the victim of domestic violence, mental torture, and whatnot both from her husband and in-laws.
The irony is that these people don't want the girl to do a job(even if they allow, then they'll expect that girl to take care of her kids, husband, in-laws and do all the household chores too without any mercy) and at the same time expect a lot of money and gifts from her paternal house and if they didn't get it, then they will abuse her, beat her, harass her mentally or physically, taunt her or can even divorce for such an irrational ground.
We are living in a civilized and welfare society. Many of us are literate now, and we must realize that this gender inequality and unconventional bias need to be ended immediately. The time to change our mindsets is NOW!!
Although the 2005 amendment in Hindu Succession Act is good news but the lack of awareness in women and the emotional trap by patriarchal society may not let her acquire it. Also, other religions also need to come up with such laws. As it is rightly said by the honorable Supreme Court Of India that, “Once a daughter is always a daughter”
'Freedom cannot be achieved unless women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression"
Jai Hind!!
