Story Behind Onam Celebration

Hey guys,

I’m back with a new interesting story behind the celebration in Kerala “ONAM”. It’s the celebration of Malayali. It’s  celebrated in the every corner of the world were Malayali are.
It is in the month of ‘Chingam’ which comes in between of August and September in Gregorian calendar.

The story begins with a king who is known as ‘Mahabali’. He was so benevolent and generous king who ruled the country without any discrimination. All other countries felt jealous about him. People were living so peacefully in that place. There was a poem in Malayalam

‘Maveli naaduvaneedum kaalam, Manushyarellarum onnupole, Kallavumilla chadhiyumilla, Ellolamilla polivachanam.’

Which means the king mahabali (maveli) was ruling the kingdom without discrimination and there were no cheating or lie and also no one broke their promise.

These stories reached to the Gods. They too felt jealous on Mahabali. Thus Lord Vishnu  decided to check whether all these are truth or myths. Lord Vishnu took the avatar of ‘Vamanan’ who was a dwarf child.

He shown himself in-front of the king and asked for 3 foot of land for him. Mahabali agreed with his wish and said him to take 3 foot land. At the time Vamanan started growing and he took the whole earth in one foot and another foot took the sky. Vamanan asked for the third step. Mahabali the great of greatest shown  his own head joyfully as the place for his third foot. Lord took the head as his third step and send him to ‘pathalam’.

Lord Vishnu was so happy about the dedication and the character of the king. Recognising the attitude of Mahabali Lord blessed that he could guard the gates by himself and see the kingdom and ‘Prajas’ and wish them  once in a year.

So this day is celebrated as the Onam.
To welcome the Lord Mahabali, Every home will be decorated with the flower carpet known as  ‘pookalam’. And prepare food (Sadhya) for him. The whole nature will be prepared to welcome him by Plants blooming flowers, Trees having fruits, crops to be harvested.

For onam sadhya will be prepared as food. And there will be ‘payasam’ as the dessert. There won’t be any non-veg on that day. Sadhya will be having many side dishes more than 18. Such as pachadi, kichadi, Aviyal, sambhar, pappadam, achar, thoran, puli inchi, etc.

It is celebrated for 10 days. Every one will be having 10 day vacation. Without any caste or religion difference everyone likes to celebrate Onam.

Hope you knew about what’s behind the Onam celebration and you liked it.
