The title of this blog might be surprising. This blog is about the truth of Gravitional Force. But it is true that Gravitional force is not a force at all.
As soon as one reaches 8th and 9th standard, the Physics books can be found to be filled with concepts of Force, Momentum, Laws of Motion and a special thing called Gravitational Force.
So what have you read about Gravitational Force? Is it something like this-
Gravitational Force is a Universal Force of attraction that is exterted by any object on any other object which is directly proportional to the masses of the two objects and inversely proportional to the square of distance between them.
F = G(m1•m2)/d²
But actually it is not true. Gravitational Force is not actually a force and one can easily reach to this conclusion by asking a simple question - “If gravitational force depends on the masses of the two objects, how is light, which has zero mass, affected in the gravitational force of a black hole?”
This is because under the effect of gravity, no object changes its path, I repeat, no object changes its path, at all. Under gravity, every object tries to take the straightest path possible. Even if you throw a ball upwards and it comes back downwards, appatently changing its path, it actually is still taking the shortest possible path. Because under such conditions, a parabola is the shortest path possible.
A simple way to understand that is by supposing that you are moving on a straight road. If you change lanes or take a turn to another road, then you are changing direction. But that's true as long as the road is straight. What if the road which you are moving on, itself bends? You will have no other option but to walk along the road. But aren't you changing directions? Yes you are, but only for a person who is moving on a straight road. For yourself and for anyone else moving one your road, you are moving straight.
In case of gravitation, the road is spacetime which is a vast 3-dimensional tissue stretch all over the universe and it gets deformed due to uneven distribution of mass. We see that a planet is a large chunk of mass with almost no mass around its atmosphere. Hence, this uneven distribution of mass causes the spacetime to deform and hence the path of every object moving inside this deformed spacetime also changes.
All this is a part of ‘The General Theory of Relativity’ given by Albert Einstein in 1915 which gives the relation between space and gravity. It tells a lot more things like gravity being a wave which travels at almost the speed of light. So, if the sun dissapears, not only the sunlight but also the gravitational effect of sun will last for 8 more minutes.
There's so much more kept in the General Theory of relativity that it would be too much to explain, and after all there is still the whole Special Theory of relativity as well which tells the relation between space and time.
