The original John Wick was a film that came out of nowhere at the end of 2014, and reminded everyone how good an action film really could be… It so rightfully became a cult classic among action fans, and was quickly regarded as being one of the best action films of all time! A sequel was in full demand and quickly solidified itself as being one of the best action sequels ever made, John Wick Chapter 2 delivers everything that fans of the first film would want, with more cool and colourful characters, a lived-in world of assassins, and some of the most stunning action sequences to ever grace the screen in over a decade. Have you ever walked out of a film so struck by awe and wonder your skin is abuzz? Has a film ever left you so joyful and drunk on adrenaline that it made you more hopeful about the industry of cinema? Has a lead performance in an action film ever had such balletic grace it made you marvel at the possibilities of the human body itself? Have you ever had such a massive grin on your face watching Keanu Reeves shoot people in the head? There’s a simple pleasure to be had in just how satisfying it is watching Keanu Reeves shoot people in the head! Well, this is exactly how I felt watching John Wick Chapter 2! If there's an equivalent of classical orchestra for untamed unapologetically brutal carnage, there's no doubt it'd be John Wick! Dancing through a hail of bullets, hordes of assassins straight from a video game, oozing noir style from each drop of blood, John Wick Chapter 2 is nothing short of an artistic spectacle. This is the fine wine of action films, classily designed and feeling elegant every step of the way. Of course, the reason to truly cherish John Wick Chapter 2 is the mesmerising action. Director Chad Stahelski and the film’s cinematography make every frame a sumptuous visual feast. They take advantage of the outsized world they’ve created, forming a colour palette unique to the action film landscape that gives John Wick Chapter 2 a painterly quality. There is an artistry and detail to even minor scenes of characters trading barbs that express the sheer mythic and grand nature of the story. The sound design highlighting the crunch of bones, splatter of blood, and the various repercussions of these increasingly intense battles is also quite artful. In many ways, it’s the platonic ideal of an action film: operatic yet coloured with fine-tuned details, blisteringly visceral yet tinged with pathos. For all it’s great craft, the film is ultimately a showcase for Keanu Reeves, who returns as the titular assassin, proving his greatness as an actor and action star! Yes, that’s right, I said greatness. No qualifiers necessary! John Wick Chapter 2 is truly wondrous, but it wouldn’t work without Reeves, who has a clear sincere love of this genre.
