In the very beginning, before the creation of anything, before the start of the flow of time, existed only the primordial water of Nun- dark and infinite. There was no end to it. And jn these waters were all of the elements of creation. But in a boundless liquid state, they were almost inert. They were just combined as nothing could be actually formed by them. It would take a miracle for anything to appear.
Within the waters of Nun, Atum, the god created himself from the darkness that revolved around him. Then, he impregnated himself. Atum's mouth functioned as a womb and through his thought and wish, his seed transformed into the fetuses of two children. The twins born were Shu and Teftnut. One of them was spat out and the other was sneezed out of Atums mouth. Shu became the god of Air, sunlight and dry, whereas Tefnut was the goddess of moisture. Atum's hand later became personified as the goddess with which the children were born. At first, they all were clung to each other so that it was as if they were a single entity. Atum, then gave some aspects to each of his children. Shu was named as life and Teftnut was named as Maat, which was a trinity of virtues: order, justice and truth. Now, Shu and Teftnut were free to leave their father's embrace, and so they did.
The two of them then produced two children of their own, Geb, a son and Nut, a daughter. Geb was the personification of Earth and Nut was the personification of the sky. But Geb and Nut were also clung to each other. Life would not flourish if they were not to be separated. Nut was pregnant with many children but she could not birth them. Then, Shu separated his children. He pushed Nut on his head and pressed Geb below his feet. Air filled the space between them so that life could exist.
The first sunrise was considered as the perfect moment in ancient Egyptian Mythology, and it was the second birth of the creator god. From that moment, Atum existed as Ra or Atum- Ra. With the sky, the atmosphere and the earth, the outer limits of the world were also defined and fixed. The children of Nut and Geb were Osiris, the ruler of underground, Seth lord of the deep desert, Isis, a master of healing and magic and Nephthys, goddess of protection.
