Today we will be discussing about an opinion of the richest man of the world, Elon Musk. The 50 year old billionaire showed his concerns on the sensitive topic on the fertility rate report, and said that the human civilization may possibly fade away slowly.
The CEO of Tesla and investor of spaceX shared an opinion on twitter regarding his concerns that the Earth is experiencing a “Population Collapse”. He further added that humans need to procreate more in order to take life on the planet, Mars.
Elon Musk himself being the father of 7 kids, said that he is trying to set a good example. He said that population collapse is a much larger problem than people realize. As a result of having 58 million followers on twitter, Elon's tweets have the most influence on people all over the globe.
And yes, population decline may become a serious issue in somewhere near future. It is the reduction in a size of human population whic may be caused by various events such as pandemics, wars, or even emigration and sub replacement fertility rate.
Lets address the issue mathematically of the fertility rate falling to zero. If this number falls below 2.1, then the population size starts to fall of a certain area or region. Around 1950s, women were having an average of 4.7 kids in their entire lifetime. Researchers showed that the global fertility rate have halved to 2.4 in 2017 and they assume it may fall below 1.7 by 2100.
Is this a problem then???
One might think this is actually good for the environment. A lesser population size causes lesser carbon emissions and deforestation. Except the inversion of the age structure, which means there might be more old people than young ones. A study assumes that the number of under 5 years old may fall to just 401 million by the year 2100. And the no. of over 80 years old will be 866 million by 2100. This will be the reason for a massive social change.
