Kisagotami, a young girl was married to the only son of a wealthy man. She had given birth to a beautiful child, but the child died after some days. The young mother was so much loving her child. That she could it believe its death. She carried her dead child to every house and asked the people to give some medicine to cure her child. People felt very pity for the young lady.
The young women then went to a Buddhist monk, who pacified her. He said to her, “You good lady, I myself don't have such a medicine you are asking for, but I know a man who really has it.” “Oh, please tell me the name and address of that person”, said Kisagotami. “ Gautam Buddha can give you the medicine", said the monk.
She went to Gautam Buddha, and said to him sobbingly, “ My Lord! Can you give me any medicine that can cure my child?” “ Yes, i can cure your child,” he said. In those times, the patient himself or his relatives need to arrange the medicine, which the doctors required. So, Kisagotami asked Gautam Buddha that which herbs should she bring to cure her child.
“I want mustard seeds,” said Gautam Buddha. The poor woman prompted to bring some mustard seeds soon, but Buddha added, “You must get it from a house where nobody has died till date.”
The young women went to bring the mustard seeds carrying her dead child in her lap. The people tired to help Kisagotami. “Here are the mustard seeds, Take them.” But she said, “ I want the seeds from a house where nobody has died till date.” the people got utterly confused to hear this. They replied, “What are you saying poor lady! how can you imagine a house where nobody has died?”
She could not find a single house, which had never suffered any death. Now, she had to accept the reality of the death. She recognized the eternal truth. “ One who has taken birth will have to die one day.” Her mind began med down herself to understand the things and she calm. She left the dead body of her child in a forest, and then returned to Gautam Buddha. Gautam Buddha asked her, “Have you brought the mustard seeds?”
“My Lord,” she replied, “I haven't. And I don't even need them now. For now I have understood the reality of life and death.” Buddha smiled and removed all her doubts with his preaching. The women felt very contented after having Gautam Buddha preaching. She accepted that all which happened to with her was only because it was written in her fate. Its inevitable, and nobody could ever escape from it. So one has to accept it willingly or unwillingly. She became a disciple of Gautam Buddha and lived rest of her life piously on his path.
