Friends, last week, those watching both the moon and the sun got to see another beautiful sight.
The light of the full moon was shining on the sky.
This was completed before the moon came over Horizon. This moon appeared very large when it rose in the eastern sky, at about the same time as the sun was setting in the western sky.
Well, we are talking about the first full moon of summer this year, also known as Strawberry Moon. And it has also been considered the last supermoon of the year.
A supermoon appears about 7% larger and about 15% brighter than a typical full moon.
Why is it called Strawberry Moon?
The full moon of June is called the Strawberry Moon because according to some American tribes, this is the time to ripen and harvest strawberries.
How is Strawberry Moon formed?
The Strawberry Moon is the most colorful moon of the year because it follows a low, shallow path across the sky, said Bob Bonadurer, director of the planetarium of the Milwaukee Public Museum.
June’s Full Moon passes through the lower arc of Earth’s atmosphere, so its color often appears orange or yellow.
Other names for June’s fullmoon
June’s Full Moon is also known by many other names such as Mid Moon, Honey Moon, Flower Moon, Rose Moon etc.
Rose Moon
It is called the Rose Moon because it occurs around the time of the rose’s bloom.
Hot Moon
Strawberry Moon is also called Hot Moon because it rises only at the beginning of summer.
Honey Moon
Some old European writings also refer to the Full Moon as Honey Moon or Mead Moon. The end of June is the time for honey ripening and harvesting. Some people add honey to make a drink called Mead. Sometimes this drink is prepared by adding fruits, spices, etc. to it. Mead in some countries is also called honey wine. The term honey moon dates back to at least the 1500s in Europe. It is believed that the tradition of calling the first month of marriage a honeymoon can be associated with this full moon.
Phase of Full Moon
The Moon takes about 29.5 days to complete one revolution of the Earth, during which it has reached its full phase. The summer solstice coincides with the Strawberry Moon only once in 20 years.
