Hello everyone! In this blog is about agriculture….
Agriculture plays an important role in our lives. It provides food and feeds us. But did you know that it's much more than that? Agriculture is directly connected to our economy, culture, environment and society. It contributes to economic development, poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability. At its core, it is about production and consumption.
In today's world, agriculture is facing some challenges including climate change. As people continue to live longer and require more nutritious diets, agriculture must adapt to meet their basic needs. In order to do this, we need to examine the issues around agriculture and find ways to improve agricultural practices.
Accordingly, what are the issues of agriculture in our current context? How does agriculture affect our communities? What should we focus on to make changes? I have listed down the following three major topics that are closely related to each other. So let's take a look at them.
First, let's start off with the issue of food security. Food security refers to the quality of food supply in the face of increased demand. It means having adequate supplies for everyone, regardless of income level. We often hear about how hungry people are in developing countries where they don't always have enough access to food. However, many people in developed countries struggle with hunger and obesity due to lack of access to safe and nutritious foods. In fact, according to statistics from the United Nations, globally over 805 million people (about 13% of the population) were undernourished in 2016. An estimated 1 billion people in the Asia-Pacific region suffer from chronic malnutrition.
Second, let's talk about the issue of nutrition. Nutrition is defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary as the condition of body structure and function. This basically means that nutrition is about getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients needed to sustain good health. Today, we have become accustomed to eating junk food and fast food, which may not provide us with the necessary nutrients to maintain good health. Therefore, if we want to ensure good nutritional status, we need to eat well. A study done by the World Health Organization showed that more than half of the people in the world still consume inadequate amounts of micronutrients, especially vitamin D, iron, zinc, iodine, folate and calcium.
Finally, let's talk about water scarcity. Water scarcity is the term given to describe situations where the quantity of water is insufficient to meet the needs of human activities, especially industrial activities. Water is critical for all aspects of life, including food production, transportation, manufacturing, household usage and sanitation. Many parts of the world, including dry regions and semi-arid areas, are experiencing serious problems with water shortage.Globally, water scarcity has been identified as a major threat to global food security.
