Superstitions are basically the blind beliefs that are present among us and are followed and shared from generation to generation. These superstitions can have a great influence on one's life and also can have a positive or a negative impact on how a person behaves , makes decisions, build relationships etc. Therefore they are an integral part of the lives of people. Although many of them are not based on any religious faith, nor do they have any scientific reason, however they are followed and practiced.
One such superstition is 'opening an umbrella indoors is considered bad luckβ. Umbrellas are familiar all around the world and are in use since the Egyptian times. Initially e the umbrellas used by the Egyptians were made of peacock feathers and they were used to protect them from the Sun and also they represented their goddesses. They were used only by the nobles and also were considered as holy tools. Even if its shadow used to fall somehow on a person who was not noble, it was considered bad luck and disrespect of the Sun god. In the same way, opening an umbrella indoors was also considered as a bad luck as it displeases the Sun god when it is opened away from the Sun.
Another belief is that, there are many guardian spirits that are present in our homes that protect us from the negative energies around us. And opening an umbrella inside a house is considered as an insult to these guardian spirits and can cause them to leave the house, leaving the house unprotected from the negative energies. Another belief that is followed widely is that one should never keep an open umbrella on a furniture or on a bed as doing this invites diseases or can even cause death in a house.
These superstitions exist because they are followed. Even in this 21st century people are anxious about opening an umbrella inside their homes. It still causes them a sense of uneasiness. However, talking about its scientific reason this superstition can be explained in a better way if we move forward to London. Modern umbrellas the first invented in 18th century in London. However, they were not automatic. Also, they were made of spring triggers and hard metal spokes and very much bigger in the 21st century umbrellas. This was the main reason that they were dangerous to open indoors. Moreover, they could cause serious injury or damage two household items of the people of the house.
Therefore this superstition was just a warning to people as opening the umbrellas in doors is just for the safety of the people themselves and their property which soon turned out to be a big superstition and people started considering it as a bad luck. The main reason of it turning out to be a superstition is that superstitions are more likely to effect people rather than the warnings and people are more interested in following these superstitions done considering a warning.
Although d superstitions are culturally accepted and also followed All around The World , it is on us that how we take or receive these superstitions. In the end the choice is within ourselves, we be brave enough to open an umbrella in our homes or keep believing these superstitions blindly.
