The demon named Tripura was recognized as 'Kaal' because of his atrocities in the three worlds and Shankar was called Mahakal because of killing the demon of Kaal.  Since Kalajayi Shankara was established here, hence its ancient name was Avantika, which means devoid of end.  According to the Puranas, the expansion of Mahakal is in the three worlds - Tarak in the sky, Hatkeshwar in Hades and Mahakaleshwar in the death world.  Probably for this reason the Mahakaleshwar temple is divided into three parts. 

 Nagchandreshwar is above all, Omkareshwar in the middle and Mahakaleshwar is situated below.  The Bhasma Aarti at four o'clock in the morning is very important and has special significance for the tantriks.  Mahakal is considered to be the ruler of Ujjayini (the land that conquers with excellence).  In Meghdoot, Kalidas has given a very beautiful description of the evening aarti of Lord Mahakal.  At sunset, when the aarti of Bhootbhavan God used to start, the drums started ringing and the lamps started flickering.  

Shiva is also considered the Adi Dev of dance and music.  Bharata Muni's Natyashastra mentions 108 dance postures of Shiva, which have been praised for engraving them in the premises.  Through these mudras, they became sages and sages and He used to pacify the curiosity of the gods.  It is said that Panini composed Sanskrit grammar inspired by the 14 types of sounds of Shiva's damaru, which are called 14 Maheshwara Sutras and are unchangeable till date. 

In the Skanda Purana, Mahakal, the ruler of Ujjayini, is called the originator of Kalachakra, in the Vamana Purana, Nabhidev and in the Yoga Shastra, Ujjayini is called Manipur Chakra.  It is also estimated by some scholars that due to the central geographical position of Ujjayini, Mahakal was considered to be seated here and the process of counting of times would have been started considering Jyotirlinga as a cone place.
