Allow me to share an unforgettable experience from my time working with a leading voluntary organization in Kottayam, where I was involved in a community-based disaster management program. During this period, I had the opportunity to visit various fieldwork activities, and one particular incident stands out in my memory.

Accompanied by a few staff members from our partner NGO and a trusted colleague, we ventured into the backwater areas of Changanacherry, where people were living amidst marshy lands. It was here that I had a remarkable encounter with a rural woman who shared her poignant story of resilience in the face of adversity.

As we engaged in conversation, she recounted her harrowing experience during a devastating flood. With a sense of profound sincerity, she expressed a sentiment that resonated deeply within me. She said, "Sir, we can manage without drinking water, but the availability of even a small amount of water for our toilet needs is absolutely essential in the morning. How can I ensure the well-being of my family during such times?"

Her words struck a chord within me, challenging the commonly held belief that drinking water is the primary concern for people everywhere during a disaster. This courageous woman's story shed light on the stark realities of life and how circumstances can differ greatly from one individual to another.

At first glance, one might assume that during flooding, the waterlogged surroundings could be utilized for basic sanitary purposes. However, she explained that such water was contaminated and unsuitable for any use, let alone meeting their toilet requirements. Her words served as a powerful reminder that the challenges faced by individuals in dire circumstances can often be more nuanced than we initially perceive.

This encounter profoundly impacted my perspective on social work and the importance of understanding the unique needs and struggles of each community we serve. It was a humbling experience that taught me to listen attentively to people's stories, as their insights can uncover hidden dimensions of vulnerability and resilience.

As I reflect on this extraordinary encounter, I am reminded of the indomitable spirit and strength that can be found within individuals facing adversity. Their unwavering determination to address even the most basic of human needs serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Through sharing this experience, I hope to convey the valuable lesson I learned from that rural woman. Let us remember that empathy, compassion, and an open mind are essential in the realm of social work, allowing us to truly understand and support those we seek to serve. By acknowledging and responding to the diverse and multifaceted needs of communities, we can work towards building a more inclusive and compassionate society.
