Pariyerum Perumal fame director Mari selvaraj join hands with the great actor Dhanush on this exception movie called Karnan. The title and some character names in this movie are closely associated with the epic Mahabharatham however there is no story wise or comical representation about the same.
The story revolves around a rural village called podiyankulam resides between two other villages where they have no access of bus since there is no bus stop in the village. The other villagers are keen not to provide bus stop not for their convenience but for the oppressive mindset they had towards the lower caste people. Karnan along with his villagers fight against the oppressors and officials to bring back the basic right of what they deserved by this constitution.
Dhanush once again proved his marvellous acting and he is so believable with his different facial expressions of joy and anger. Scenes where he dances with his villagers for achieving the villagesword , the kabadi match scene , the interval scene and at climax final confrontation scene with Natraj are so sensibly written and very well executed by Dhanush.
Other main charaters performed by Lal and Yogi babu were genuine in what they did. Actor Lal showed so much of maturity and variation when compared to his recent release sultan. Yogi babu did a different role of negative shade in this movie however as a character he scored above the pars. Female lead Rajisha vijayan looked so native and she did her part as draupathi well. Other special mentions were Gauri kishan , Natraj, Lakshmi priya do justice to their roles.
The main hero for this movie is Mari selvaraj the way he carried this film to the next level. His screen play and the method of conveying are above expectations. Some special sequences are the way he portrayed dead people, the donkey, Horse, elephant, butterfly and the story telling through the living being is very much connected with one another. Especially when he shows police brutality through one butterfly shatters its wings inside the police station.
The real asuran in this movie is Santhosh narayan and especially the background music. Ohh man, the interval block, rain confrontation and the climax speaks more through the energetic BGM of SaNa . The man really deserves to the best and beast of his times. Other mentions where cinematographer and Art director cause of the overwhelming work they did. Most of the slow motion and drone shots are so pleasing and touching. The Entire village was made as a set work by the art director and he create the whole lot of emotions through the properties selection and the making of 90’s houses and their life style of particular landscape of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi.
There are also some negative points like drag issues and unwanted love scenes in first half and song placements throughout the movie, they can’t reduce the impact of what Karnan does to our soul and it should be one of the milestone film in 2021.
