Hi guys…its viji… today I am going to share my experience towards the society of India where the dark skin is not meant to be beautiful. I have been through so many bullies when my childhood… they are…
“The black skin is not a badge of shame, but rather a glorious symbol of national greatness.” -Marcus Garvey
In 2001, when i was born with Indian dusky skin tone I never knew that my skin tone is going to be my biggest insecurity. I could remember the first time I was bullied by my relative that, “Nobody is going to marry you, if you are this much dark” and they suggest me many remedies to brighten my skin. Then I realize I am not ugly, I just born in a judgmental society.
THE DIRTY BEAUTY INDUSTRY
The Indian beauty products are always favorable to only fair skin people. I never saw any beauty products for dark skin people. I want to know one thing that these brands are thinking that black people couldn’t afford beauty products. First time I saw on a television ad that shows dark skin meant to be ugly and unsuccessful and fair skin people are always successful. So if we want to change our skin tone we must use their whitening products. The ugly truth is I tried the product, that gives nothing to me and I was traumatized by the brand.
There are only four FMCG brands who manufacture most of the cosmetic products in India. I was totally disappointed that they literally have no products that match my skin tone. Their ads are always showing a fair skin perfect women that not at all relatable to dark people.
MY INSPIRATION
I am inspired by Rihanna who is the richest female musician and owns fenty beauty a billion dollar brand. She is the black women and she once told, “I want women of all the shades to feel beautiful and confident no matter what kind of shade they are, and everyone is deserve to feel beautiful”. These lines gives me confident and inspire me to start my own brand of cosmetics. I want to include all the shades and all the genders to feel beautiful. ”What all the genders?” I hear your mind voice. Makeup is not meant to women, It is for all the genders. If I start to talk about genders, I need to write a whole another article.
MY MOM’S WORDS TO ME
My mom once told to me,” your skin tone does not define your knowledge or anything. That also does not adding anything special in your life. So just be yourself and be happy with what god gives you”.
