In this composition, I would like to throw some light on the great author Maupassant's guru or the person who actually nurtured the seed of writing in this genius.
Glustave Flaubert's novel ‘Madame Bovary’ had literally created a storm in France and this storm also started spreading in the entire Europe. But why was this storm created? Glustave had become a famous name amongst the author group existing at that time in Europe. He was becoming famous due to his skill in writing non fiction and reality based novels. He was being regarded as the father of realistic novels during his time. He fame had already spread far and wide.
On the other hand, the venerable section of the society strongly went against him, calling his novel ‘Madam Bovary’ an indecent novel. They also revolted to ban the novel. It was during this time that Flaubert started loosing his mental peace . 'Madam Bovary' snatched his urge of living as a human. Flaubert started drowning himself in the ocean of loneliness. He did not enjoy the company of any Human soul whatsoever. He started avoiding people as much as he could.
One day, he got strangely introduced to a young boy aged in his early twenties. The young boy had brought with him a letter from a lady, who was an old friend of Flaubert. The letter read, “I am sending my son to you. He wants to become a great author. If you help him , he will definitely be able to follow his dream”.
Flaubert had received similar request already before and he could not help laughing away the request. Flaubert thought, “ Is this the job of an office clerk that anybody or everybody can do it ?”.
Flaubert Had refused the request of everyone before this young man, but somehow he could not refuse this young man. Something in his face stopped him from refusing him.
Flaubert handed a big fat book to the young boy and told him to read that book thoroughly. He also told him that he could only become a writer if he read that book properly .
When the boy was gone, Flaubert was confident and assured that now the boy would not dream of becoming a writer anymore.
After few days, Flaubert forgot about that boy completely.
About a month later, the boy appeared again. Flaubert was disturbed by his presence and asked him about his identity and what he wanted from Flaubert.
The young boy reminded him about his mother and that he had given him a book to read. Flaubert immediately remembered him. he took the book from his hand and saw that it was a dictionary.
Flaubert asked the young boy, ' Have you read this book?
The boy replied. ' You had said to that if I learned this book by heart then I would become a writer for sure, so I memorized the entire book.
Flaubert was surprised to notice the urge and tenacity in the boy. He thought if he groomed the boy then he could probably follow his dream. Flaubert started asking some strange question to the boy.
He said, "Look outside that window there What do you see?"
The boy replied “ A tree”.
Flaubert asked," can you only see a tree?"
The boy answered" I can see a house beside the tree"
Again Flaubert asked," Can you find anything other than the tree and the house?"
The boy replied, “ I can see the huge sky and a bird flying”
Flaubert was very pleased to hear this answer. He said to the boy.
" The bird that you see in the sky, is not alone. It is together with the house, sky and the tree. It is the same story with humans. Human beings are social beings and they stay together as a society. That's the life of Humans. That is the same thing with Literature, too. The greatest literature is created though integrity.
It was thereafter that the boy started getting lessons from Flaubert. He started to master the art of writing from Flaubert. After having practiced for a number of years under Flaubert's guidance, this boy published a short story. And that one piece made this boy ,the all time favorite short story writer worldwide.
He is none other than, the greatest short story writer of all time- ‘Guy De Maupassant’.
