Due to deficiency issues like underweight, undernourishment, and other govt. increasingly focusing on fortification to control the health issue related to a micro-nutrient deficiency in India.
so, let's talk about fortification
Fortification is the process of adding micronutrients in food which already present in them. food fortification is being worked out as a strategy for improving public health in India.
Some food hasn't been modified by enrichment or fortification process which is known as conventional food.
like-: fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, seafood, fermented food, herbs & spices, beverages.
Processed foods that required the addition of vitamins, minerals, etc. in order to make them functional are known as modified functional foods.
like-: Juices, dairy products, such as milk and yogurt, milk alternative, almond, rice, coconut, and cashew milk, grains, such as bread and pasta, cereal and granola, fortified eggs
Let's talk about some fortified food product
Wheat Fortification-: wheat is one of the highest consumable staples in India which is fortified with iron, folic acid, zinc, and vitamin B as per FSSAI standard to tackle the nutritional deficiency in India.
Milk Fortification-: Fortified milk is widely used around the world to help people get nutrients that may otherwise be lacking in their diets.
milk is fortified depends on where you live and what nutrient may be lacking in the typical to your country.
In the US, milk is fortified with vitamin A and vitamin D.
Edible oil Fortification-: In India edible oil is fortified with vitamin A and vitamin D. which reduce vitamin deficiency.
Salt Fortification-: Fortification of salt with iodine has started in India in1962. which is reduce iodine deficiency in India. then again, the fortification of iodized salt with iron is the initiative of double fortified salt (DFS).
Rice Fortification-: The use of fortified rice in midday meals, under the integrated child development services scheme in India in Dec. 2019. Fortified rice can help to fight against deficiency of vitamin B12, folate (B9) vitamin, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, zinc, niacin, and iron.
