My spouse was narrating the story with lots of excitement. She was talking of our new neighbour. The woman was known to possess supernatural power. I was neither a disbeliever nor very enthusiastic to explore those dreadful things. 

As the story goes, our household helper, named Puja, went to the woman to seek her assistance in searching for her missing husband. I could not understand the reason for the search, as our household help was then living with one male partner. Probably she wanted to make sure that her husband did not return anytime soon or later. My spouse was not interested in my query; instead, she scolded me for too many questions. 

So, the mystic woman supposedly saw the husband of Puja in a mirror facing towards her. Her husband is in Uttar Pradesh; he is presently working in a guest house. The woman could bring him back by doing a special puja, which costs twenty thousand. 

My spouse wanted to go to the mysterious woman. The childhood of my spouse passed in Jaynagar, a small town in the south of Kolkata. In those days, that area was infested with bandits. Keeping jewellery in the locker was not in practice at that time. Once they went to a relatives house and stayed there for the night. The mischief makers took that opportunity and stole all the jewellery kept at home. They have suspicion that it may have been done by some neighbour. My spouse wanted to get back the jewellery that was stolen almost twenty years ago. I burst in laughter. I said that the jewellery may have been melted a long ago. 

As always, my spouse owns the argument. One evening we went to the mystic woman. She stays in a large apartment. The woman received us with a warm smile and took us to her private chamber. The walls of the room are painted with obscure figures. Skulls, human bones, and other dreadful things were kept in the room. The woman dressed in a black robe; her eyes were engrossing. I tried my best to avoid eye contact with the woman. 

The woman looked into the eyes of my spouse and next glanced at her palm. She started conversing in a husky voice. The woman talked a few things about my wife. Although not everything she said was true, my spouse seemed convinced. She put up her query about the lost jewellery. 

The woman chanted some mantras and then took out the mirror. The lights of the room were offed. The room was dimly lit with a candle. She held the mirror, circling her fingers in front of it. Then she began narrating the event. As she narrates, it was a full moon night, and at the midnight, doors opened up. A teenager appeared; he seems skinny with curly hair. The boy opened the almirah and took out the box of jewellery. It seems that the teenager had keys with him. I was thrilled. Is there a science to reproduce a moment that has passed a long time ago?. 

The mystic woman switched on the lights. My spouse took deep breaths and asked the important query, Do the jewellery can be got back?. The mysterious woman smiled for some time, then said it was too late; the jewellery travelled through many hands. 

My wife's face sank, but I admired the honesty of the mysterious woman.
