//The Outsiders by S.E Hinton//
πSet in late 1960s America, it tells the tale of Ponyboy Curtis ,his family consisting of his 2 brothers and their boy gang. It is heart wrenching and heart warming at the same time.
πThe book brings into light the socio-rconomic disaparities that put greasers (working class) like ponyboy and his gang at disadvantage.They are constantly bullied and beaten up by the socs(their well to do upper-class counterparts).The boys stick together and pull each other through thick and thin.They have to constantly ward off bullying from the socs and work odd jobs to fill their mouths.You will feel sorry for them butmore than that you will feel respect.
π Ponyboy is youngest in the gang and the story is centred around him.He is good at school,sports and more importantly has a curious wonder and delight at the world in which he resides.He enjoys sunsets and is eager to explore the world around him ,no matter how muchhe is warned that the world is unfair. Besides ponyboy, his cool ,fun loving brother sodapop and strict ,hardworking elder brother are also adorable.Jimmy is another character that is sure to leave a deep impact upon you.
πThe book isn't long but the character build up and the way it has the power to resonate with certain chords inside us, is amazing.Ponyboy and all the characters relate with you in one way or the other and perhaps even you had a tough time growing up like ponyboy did.
πComing of the age also known as bildungsroman has always been one of my best loved genres.Growing up I found a sense of belonging in these books and now even past my teenage years,I find a comforting solace in these books. (Well ,who wouldn't)
πIt's been a while since a book satisfied me this way and I would go as far as to say it is one of my absolute favourites.I highly tecommend it to my fellow book lovers. Hinton is surely a master story teller and if you are looking to discover more in the literary world ,you should not miss his name.
