Since the environment is complex as it includes natural, constructed and cultural environments. Similarly environmental science being multidisciplinary requires understanding and the knowledge from wide ranging fields thus exhibiting a great scope. Environmental factors greatly influence every organism and their activities. Management of natural resources, biodiversity and its conservation, environmental pollution, social issues related to environment etc. are some of the areas which require expertise and hence creating job opportunities.

The subject expertise can be applied in following spheres:-

• Conservationists:- They works with government and private agencies to help them find ways to utilise the resource without harming the the environment.

• Industries:- Industries besides development is sabotaging the environment. So, environmental experts are required to promote environment green good i.e. goods which are eco-friendly. Environmental scientists in industries have to deal with pollution control and waste management.

• Consultancy:- Environmental consultancies are hired by different types of industries, agencies, NGO's to carry out laboratory based analysis and field based studies.

• Research and development:- Several universities and government based institutions offer jobs for undertaking research and development. It includes studying different types of environmental problems, their causes, effects and developing strategies to control or abate them.

• Social development:- Various NGO's (non government organisation) are working all over the world to prevent any further damage to environment. They are brimming with people who have devoted their life to environmental causes. They implement environmental programmes with the help of funds. Ministry of environment forest and climate change has an NGO cell in to strengthen the environmental movements. Vatavaran, green-peace, vanshakti, TERI WWF etc. are some of the well known NGO's.

• Academics:- Environmental science is taught almost at all the levels of education. Therefore, a legion of academics are required to fulfill this need.

• Government jobs:- A number of jobs is being offered by government bodies such as environmental ministry, pollution control boards, forest department.

• Environmental journalism:- Many media houses face dearth of professionals who can write on environmental issues for generating awareness among the public. There are certain agencies like earthscan, centre for science, INTACH etc. which publish articles on environmental issues.

• Green advocacy:- Environmental lawyers play an important role in proper implementation of environmental laws. We have NETA(national environmental tribunal act), NGT(national green tribunal) for expeditious disposal of case  related to environmental issues. Private counsellors who work with industries, project planners, real estate etc. provide legal information to them, so that they can work in compliance with environmental norms.

• International agencies:- International agencies such as UNEP, WWF, IUCN, MAB, world bank require proficient people for their projects.
