Hi friends and family.  I am good and expect the same from you. After a long gap, today I am here to share with you all an interesting topic. Have you ever wondered about the history of Indian jewelry?.  It's a vast topic. So, I am going to share a small part of it. Have you heard about “Yedu Varala Nagalu” ?. If not, this article helps you to know about it. 

The history of traditional Indian Jewelry is as old as the Indian History. The word “Jewelry” originates from the Latin word “Jocale”. 5000-7000 years ago during Ramayana and Mahabharata times was when jewelry and the art of wanting to beautify oneself was popularized. Jewelry designs are available in wide variety in India. Each state has its own culture and jewelry is made according to their traditions. The most commonly used jewelry by Indian women are maangtika, nose pins, necklace, earrings, Mangal sutra and bangles. For Indian Culture, jewelries play a important and symbolic role. They carry ethnic and spiritual meanings.

In ancient days, these “Yedu Varala Nagalu” (in English “Seven Week Jewelry”) has a great demand and value. People used to treat these jewelry as Symbol of Respect. Till today everyone is fond of this jewelry and wanted to know about it. Yedu means “Seven”, Varala means “week” (Sunday to Saturday) and Nagalu means “Jewelry”. In olden days, rulers used to wear jewelry as per days of the week to attract positivity and avoid negativity in order to be healthy and wealthy. It is said that the Seven days of the week in Hindu calendar, is ruled by Seven planets respectively. 

Names of Seven days of the Hindu Week:

Ravivaram (Sunday)- Day of The Sun (Suryudu).

Somavaram (Monday)- Day of The Moon (Chandrudu).

Mangalavaram (Tuesday)- Day of Mars (Kujhudu).

Budhavaram (Wednesday)- Day of Mercury (Budhudu).

Guruvaram (Thursday)- Day of Jupiter (Brihaspati).

Sukravaram (Friday)- Day of Venus (Shukrudu).

Sanivaram (Saturday)- Day of Saturn (Shani).

Here are the Yedu Varala Nagalu:-

  1. Sunday- This day belongs to Sun god and relates to the Spirit. So, preferable stone is “Ruby ”. Ornaments worn were Haram and earrings.

  1. Monday- This day belongs to Moon god and relates to Romance, Loneliness and Friendship. So, “Pearl"  jewelry is preferred. Ornaments worn were haram and bangles.

  1. Tuesday- This day belongs to Mars (Kuja or Mangal) and it relates to Power. The preferable stone is "Coral" . Ornaments worn were chains and rings.

  1. Saturday- This day belongs to Saturn (Shani) and it relates to Penance, Discipline and Conscientious work. The preferred stone is “Blue Sapphire” . Ornaments were rings (mostly).

All these combined are called Yedu Varala Nagalu or Seven Week Jewelry. You can wear any type of jewelry made of these stones as per mentioned day of the week.
