The novel titled ‘The Alchemist’,by Paulo Coelho potrays the journey of an Andalusian shepherd named Santiago."There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”- nourishes the entire novel.
The Alchemist follows the journey of an Andalusian shepherd boy. Believing a recurring dream to be prophetic,he asks a gypsy fortune teller in a nearby town about its meaning. The woman interprets the dream as a prophecy telling the boy that he will find a treasure in the Egyptian pyramids.
At the beginning of the journey,he meets an old king named Melchizedek,or the king of Saleem,who tells him to sell his sheep so that he can go to Egypt and fullfill his ‘personal legend’.
At the beginning of his arrival in Africa, Santiago is extorted by a man who claims to be able to take him to the pyramids instead of money earned by selling goats. Then, Santiago embarks on a long journey for a crystal merchant to earn enough to reach the pyramids.
Along the way,the boy meets an Englishman who comes in search of an Alchemist and continues his journey with his new companion. When they arrive at an oasis, Santiago meets and fall in love with an Arabian girl named Fathima . She promises to marry him only after he completes his journey. Disappointed at first,,he later realises that true love doesn't stop and sacrifice one's personal destiny, because to do so Rob's the truth.
The boy meets a wise Alchemist who teaches him to realise his true nature. Together,they risk a journey through the territory of warning tribes,where the boyis forced to demonstrate his unity with the “spirit of the world”by turning himself into a some before being allowed to proceed. As he begins to dig within sight of the pyramids,he is robbed again,but accidentally learns from the leader of thieved that the treasure he sought was in the ruined church in his true dream.
In the novel, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, Santiago learns, “When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.Through the character Santiago,he tells what we think is easy can be the hardest . The novel nourishes the heart of millions of readers and this made it a ‘Mysterious Creation’. Through this,the author points to the boy ‘Santiago’ as the representative of the youth generation who always run after wealth and greed.
