Corona Vaccination must be the most discussed topic in 2021 literally everywhere across the nation. In your friend circle, colleagues, neighborhood, family and where not.

The three names Covaxin, Covishield and Sputnik V are also familier as we haven't had waited for any vaccine in our entire lifetime like we did for these guys.

So have you ever wondered what are they? What they do to us? Before getting into that let's have a few shots of information on what is a vaccine and how it differs from medicine( For those who are not sure)

Vaccine 

a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease.

In simple terms, vaccine helps our immune system achieve victory over the disease on future encounter, by providing a shot of the disease virus itself so that the body learn by itself to fight against it.

Now let us see how the three vaccines available in india differ.

Covaxin 

Indias home grown vaccine Covaxin developed by Bharat biotech uses an approach in which the actual Corona virus but in pathogenically diminished state allows to enter human blood stream. The virus is in inactive state and hence it is safe to be injected. Once the immune system is activated it produces antibodies complementary to the Corona virus strain.

Covishield 

This vaccine is developed by the researchers in Oxford University and the pharma company AstraZeneca in the UK. The gene for Corona virus spike protein is added to another virus called adeno virus. Adenoviruses are viruses which causes common cold like diseases. The Oxford-AstraZeneca team used adenovirus from chimpanzees for the vaccine development. Like Covaxin, against this one also immune system develops antibodies to fight and kill the virus.

Sputnik V 

The one named after  the world's first satellite, called Sputnik, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.  It is developed by the scientists in Russia. Sputnik V is also similar to Covisheild. It also uses adenovirus for carrying Corona virus. But Sputnik V uses two adenoviruses coupled with novel Corona virus.

It is important to follow up the post vaccination process in case of all these vaccines like, to drink plenty of water, take rest and take medical care incase of any difficulties. Once vaccinated, It may take several days to weeks for our body to complete all the germ-fighting process. And once the same is done, our immune system remembers what it learned in order to fight the virus in future.
