Since independence of our India we have only eight female judges in apex court of India. Indira Banerjee at present is the only female judge at apex of India among the collegium. By 23rd September,2002 she will be retired.
Anna Chandy became the first ever female judge in the High Court across India. Fatima Beevi became the first female judge of the apex court of India. Leila Seth became the first female Justice of HC across India. Since 1959, the first ever tenure of Anna Chandy to till date . Now there is is possibility of first ever female CJI of the apex court of India.
Since Anna Chandy to Indira Banerjee, women have come long way for their presence and the representation in the Higher order of Judicial system in country.
India is likely to get its first ever female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. The SC collegium headed by Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana has recommended nine judges from the different High Courts of India for their promotion to the apex court of India. Justice BV Nagarathna of Karnataka HC is among the three female judges from the list of nine judges that has been recommended by CJI of India.
Justice BV Nagarathna was born on October 30, 1962. She is the daughter of former CJI of Supreme Court of India, E.S. Venkatramiah. She become advocate at the age of 25 in the year 1987. She was appointed as the additional judge of the Karnataka HC in the year 2008 and two year later was made permanent judge of the Karnataka HC in the year 2010. In the year 2012, she, directed the Union govt. of India to develop a statutory framework to regular electronic media including television.
In 2019, she pass the judgement that since the temple is not the place of commercial establishment, hence the employees of the temple will be not paid the gratitude under the Payment Gratuity Act instead they will get gratuity benefit under the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institution and Charitable Endowment Act.
If all good happens, accordingly and govt. recommend the collegium list, she can become the first female CJI of SC of India. By the year 2027 all the other judges will retire earlier before her and she will be the senior most and will become the CJI.
