What is habit?

Habits are the choices that all of us deliberately make at some point, and then stop thinking about but continue doing, often everyday. 40 to 50% of the decisions we make each day are actually habits not really decision. It consists of three elements- a cue, a routine and a reward. This book; The power of habit tells us how can we change a bad habit into a new positive habit in our life. It gives us many stories to really understand that how habit come into play in all the levels in our life.

We might not be aware of it but habits control a big part of our lives. There are many things that we do everyday just from habit. Habit have an effect on our personal and professional life. Some of them might be negative or positive.

The Habit loop

1)At first the brain is working non stop.

2) After some trials the mental activity decreases and the brain start thinking less as it knows what to do.

3) After a week not even part of the memory is working brain, learned the task so well that it nearly does not think at all.

4) It didn't need to choose which direction to turn all it had to do was recall the quickest path to the habit.

The craving brain: as the Habit become stronger and stronger, the brain starts to anticipate reward and become happy before it comes. The happiness will come even if the reward doesn't come. A habit emerges once we begin to crave the reward when we see the cue. The brain stops fully Participating in decision making.

How to break a habit?

To change an old habit, we must address and old craving, keep the old cue, deliver the old reward but feed the craving by inserting new routine. Charles Duhigg suggested a Framework for understanding how habits work and a guide to experimenting with how they might change.

: identify the routine

:experiment with rewards

:isolate the queue

:have a plan

How to install a new habit?

For example: lets imagine that we want to start a new habit like doing daily exercise.

So we can put a poster of our favourite sports person, so that we can look at him/her and have a positive effect on our body to train ourselves. We can put on some sporty clothes and get ready. We can play are favorite soundtrack to motivate us and to lead an energetic exercise early morning. We can make a routine like- 10 minutes of Jumping jacks, 10 minutes of stretching, 10 minutes of squats, 10 minutes of burpees etc.
