Are Publicity And Advertising Same?

Hello friends since last two blogs we are discussing about advertising and its features. We discussed that advertising is an act of inducing people or  gaining their attention to buy a product or a service. We also learnt how it is different from marketing and selling. We also saw some outstanding attributes of advertising such as how it is a mass communication process and how it is informative in action. We also learnt that it is a persuasive act which is paid and has a non personal presentation. Today we will be discussing about how advertising is different from publicity. Advertising and publicity are two different terms but most people think that publicity is a part of advertising which is very far from the truth. Publicity is an effort which is done so that certain information or mis- information about someone or something reaches to the public. Publicity is not necessarily a paid activity. Publicity may or may not be related to the commercial information about the product. Publicity maybe negative or positive. For example a few years ago there was a news in market that some harmful substances were found in maggi which almost led to its ban for some time. This was the negative publicity of the product. It may not be paid. Similarly we can say that a rumour can also be spread about something or someone to publicise them. Advertising is very different from publicity. Advertising is a way of communication which is always paid. It is an act of persuasion by identified sponsor. It is an impersonal presentation of a product so that it's message reaches to maximum number of people. Advertising is generally positive. In some very rare cases negative advertising can work too but these cases will be counted as exceptions. Advertising is a mass communication process because through an ad or a radio message it reaches millions of people across the country and the globe. In case of advertising the purpose behind promotion of a product and why it needs to come in front of people is known but in case of publicity the idea of promotion and the identity of the sponsor behind it is not known or is unclear. Publicity is a comprehensive word and Advertising is a form of it. Publicity is very generic while advertising is specific. Advertising is publicity but we can't say publicity is advertising.
