Pegasus, the evolved spyware that has the capability to snoop in our digital world without our knowledge!!
The most powerful software ever created. Designed to infiltrate smartphones-- Android and IOS-- and turn them into surveillance devices. It was built by Israeli company, National Science Olympiad, Pegasus is a spyware that can infect a device connected to the internet and cam typically harvest any type of data from that device.
Earlier version required that the user has to click on a malicious link but this newer versions have evolved capabilities like zero-click attacks.
The injections which do not require any interaction from the phone's owner in order to succeed. These attacks exploit the “ Zero-day ” vulnerabilities in the operating system, that have not yet been identified.
This spyware uses over-the-air (OTA) option to send a push message to the target that injects the spyware in the phone covertly which then sends information from the device based on the remote instructions from the attacker.
iPhones have been a wide target with Pegasus through Apple's default iMessage app and the Push Notification Service. The attacker needs to feed the Pegasus system just the target phone number for a network injection.
Several high profile names have been targeted around the world. In India, more than 40 journalists, three opposition Leaders including Rahul Gandhi and two ministers in the government were reported to be on the list.
The best way is to keep the device updated with latest security patch offered by the manufacturer.
iPhone users can change their default phone browser. According to a Pegasus brochure, “ installation from browsers other than the devices' default is not supported by the system”.
The Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) developed researchers at Amnesty International can be used to detect if Pegasus Spyware targeted your phone, the above has been reported by Tech Crunch.
