The Child- A Story By Munshi Premchand

Hello everyone,

Today I am going to discuss a story which I read during my graduation. It taught me a lesson which is unforgettable so I thought to share it with you all.

The Child is a story written by Munshi Premchand. Though he doesn't need any introduction as we all have read so much written by him but still here is a brief introduction. He started his writing under the pen name Nawab Rai but he switched to Munshi Premchand because his short story collection Soz-e-Watan was banned by British administration. He was one of the most distinguished writers of the Indian subcontinent and is considered to be one of the prominent Hindi-Urdu writers of the early twentieth century.

The Child is a story that revolves around a Brahmin servant named Gangu. It is narrated by his employer. One day, Gangu tells him that he wants to leave this job because he is going to marry a woman named Gomti. The narrator warns him because she is considered to be a low character woman. He had been driven two times by her ex-husband. Gangu has a totally different opinion about her. Despite being warned by his employer and others, he marries the widow, Gomti. Tha narrator things that they would get separated soon.

After some months, Gomti runs away from Gangu. This news gives satisfaction to the narrator because this proves him right. Almost after one month, Gnagu comes to him with a child in the hands. Gangu tells him that he searched for her and found her. When the narrator asks him about the child that how he is born after only six months of marriage. Gangu smiles and says that because of this fear Gomti ran away but I told her, “This child is my child, my own child. I bought a field and will I  refuse the crop because someone else sowed it?” Listen to this, narrator's eyes get filled with tears. He extends his hands to take the child in his lap and he kisses him.

The story places Gangu's compassion, courage and acceptance of human nature as the embodiment of goodness and shows the readers a way of casting aside all kinds of pressures that people and society exert on us. We should give value to our opinions instead of thinking what others would think all the time.

Thank you for reading this.
